How to Use Use Essential Oils Roll-ons
Aromatherapy roll-ons are the easiest and most effective way to deliver the benefits of aromatherapy to all family members. Roll-ons, comprising a prediluted, ready-to-use blend of essential oils, typically come in amber glass containers varying in size from 10 ml to 15 ml sizes. A roller ball is used to apply the blend to pressure points – those typically mentioned are wrists and behind the ear lobes.
While the benefits of aromatherapy are largely obtained through inhalation, benefits are also obtained through the absorption of essential oils through the skin. The skin is relatively permeable to fat soluble substances (here we are talking about “essential oils”). And essential oil molecules are so small that when they are applied to the skin they are able to pass through the outer layer of the epidermis and ultimately via the capillaries directly into the bloodstream where they are carried to the brain.
In general, the best places to apply are on pulse points. These are areas of the body where blood vessels are close to the skin and where optimal absorption can occur. Absorption also occurs through the hair follicles and sweat ducts.
Circulation and warmth can also speed the process of absorption by increasing blood flow to the surface increasing the skin’s ability to absorb the oil. So when you are preparing to apply your roll-on, first roll it between the palms of your hands. The friction will increase the temperature of the contents. Also, the act of applying the roll-on creates friction and also warmth.
Keep in mind, too, that the larger area of skin that is covered, the more essential oils will be absorbed. Finally, the viscosity of the carrier oil in which the essential oils are diluted also is a factor in the absorption of the essential oils. You can increase the benefits from the use of roll-ons by applying them to very specific pulse points that vary depending upon the benefit sought. Roll-on and enjoy the benefits!
